In this post, I am going to explain the final step in the VIPKid hiring process which is centered on signing the contract and becoming an official VIPKid Teacher. If you have already made it to this phase of the hiring process, Congratulations! You are a ViPKid teacher…..
We are going to discuss the fourth step here.
Once you complete and pass the VIPkid Mock lesson, you receive an email.
The email will ask you to upload your important documents such as an ID, proof of your Bachelor’s degree, and any teaching certificates that you may indicate that you had on your application (if you are not a traditional teacher, you will not be asked for this).
If you are not a traditional teacher, you will be asked to complete the TESOL certification. Don’t worry about this too much, it is a much easier process than the Mock certification. The TESOL certification must be in place before you can sign your contract
In addition, you will be asked to complete a background check (you will not be able to sign the contract until the background check is complete).
Once the above items are completed, VIPKid will email a contract for you to sign electronically.
After the contract is signed, you will set up what is called a teacher profile, this is very important for attracting potential students so you will want to pay attention to detail because the teacher profile will have a direct bearing on getting your initial bookings.
Now that you know what to expect, let’s take a closer look at some things you will need to address during phase 4 of VIPKid’s interview and hiring process.
TESOL with Quiz
VIPKid has teamed up with the TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) foundation to ensure that all teachers are accredited to teach ELL (English Language Learners). This step essentially makes all VIPKid teachers certified to teach ESL (English as a Second Language). There are practical and political reasons for this step. I will touch on the practical but not on the political aspect.
This step MUST be completed by any hiring candidate that isn’t already a traditional teacher and anyone that doesn’t already hold a traditional ESL certification. Most teachers in the US and Canada already have an ESL certification so they can bypass this step.
This step is optional for traditional teachers with ESL certification, but I recommend getting it anyway. Chinese parents put a high regard certification when it comes to their children’s teachers. So, the more certifications you have the more marketable you are.
The TESOL certification through VIPKid consists of an e course and two multiple choice quizzes. The e course consists of about 11 hours of material (videos, reading academic information on the topic, and performance tasks). The e course can be completed in less time depending on how familiar a candidate is with the material. The quizzes can be taken over and over until you pass.
A few things to do to ensure quick success: 1. Look at the quiz before the material to know what important things you need to remember 2. Be prepared to take the quizzes a few times (almost all of us did) before passing 3. Remember you can take and re-take the quizzes as many times as you need to pass.
If you need help: Ask your referring teacher for assistance with this.
If you don’t have a referring teacher, I can help you with this. I have notes that are much shorter that the 11 hours of material that my referrals can use to pass the test.

If you already have a referring teacher, let them know you need help with this, and they should be able to help.
Upload Your Documents, Background Check and Tax Document
As I mentioned earlier in this post, you will need to upload all important documentation. VIPKid will send an email with a complete list of items they will need from you. The items will be submitted electronically.
You will submit information for a background check. The background check is done by a third party and can take a couple of days. The contract can’t be signed until the background check is complete so submit this information as quickly as possible for review.
If you are a US resident, you will fill out a tax document as well.
Sign the Contract
As soon as you have completed the TESOL (if necessary), the background check, the tax document, and uploaded all required paperwork, you will be able to sign the contract. When you receive the contract, you will go to the end of the electronic document with an electronic signature.
You are a VIPKid teacher!
The last time you can add a referring teacher is right before you sign your contract. A referring teacher can be very helpful to you as far as setting up your profile and assist you with getting bookings.

Set Up Your Profile
This step is very important so read carefully. The most stressful part about the hiring process is getting your initial bookings in order to start teaching so you want to give careful attention to your teacher profile. The teacher profile is how the parents find you and you want them to click on your profile once they do.
A teacher profile must include a professional and friendly profile picture, two additional casual pictures (pictures of you teaching, being with your family, or doing something fun), a short video introducing yourself, and a written bio (this is where you will sell your experience and credentials to the parents).
There are three pictures to be uploaded: one professional profile picture and two casual pictures. Keep these things in mind before uploading pictures. Your professional profile picture should only be you. Ensure that the visibility is excellent. The picture should be well lite, sharp and clear. You want to show very positive demeanor, show off your award-winning SMILE!
Your background should be your online classroom or nothing behind you that would be distracting. Clothing should be simple, non-revealing, and non-distracting. The last point should, also, serve as a guide for the casual photos as well (Example: Don’t be holding an adult beverage in your pictures, think about it). You want parents to be invited to click on your profile, so keep this in mind as your selecting pictures to upload. You may need to make a new picture for the profile picture. I took three different pictures before I was satisfied with my profile picture.
The profile video should between 30 seconds to 1 minute. I recommend that you utilize your online classroom, prospective parents want some idea of what to expect in your class. Maintain a positive demeanor throughout your video, SMILE, SMILE, SMILE!!!
You can upload a single-take or an edited video. The edited version may be preferred because you can add music and show various aspects of your classroom. I don’t know is the edited video is a better option than a single take, it really depends on you.
Remember, you want to speak enthusiastically and utilize simple and slow speech to demonstrate your ability to teach English learners. Just like in your demo and mocks, utilize TPR and props. The props you use in the video should be used in your classroom when you are teaching.
Make sure your name is visible by the way VIPKid uses a show name (Your name with some letters behind it) use the show name throughout and have it clearly visible. I would recommend that you use your show name and it is visible for every class you teach as well.
Your video should follow a basic format 1.) an introduction 2.) examples of you teaching and what it is like in your class and 3.) a call to action for example “I look forward to seeing you in my classroom!”
Here is a VIPKid Brand Ambassador giving you some excellent tips on how to do a great introduction video
This is a written bio that you will need to submit. The parents will read through this, so you want to list all your teaching experience and credentials. You want to highlight your educational background. You may want to share some personal tidbits about yourself to come across a personable (IE hobbies and interests). Make sure that you add any type of certification that you receive from VIPKid as well (ex TESOL).
Tip: There are thousands of teacher profiles for parents to look through, so you want to try to be unique in one or more ways, so you stand out. For example, most teachers start their written Bio with “Hello, my name is….” instead you may want to start your bio with an interesting fact about yourself or an interest.
For example. I am a math teacher so my bio starts with a math fact “Did you know It only takes 23 people to enter a room to give you an even chance that two of them have the same birthday?” then I introduce myself with my experience and credentials
If you are reading this post after passing your mock, congratulations on becoming a VIPKid teacher! It has been a rewarding and lucrative experience for me, and it will be for you too!
As they say at VIPKid —– Happy Teaching!!!
